Happy Fridday! Wed discussed subject and object pronouns today. Students were able to distinguish between the two and provide characteristics.
We discussed paraphrasing in writing. Students practiced paraphrasing nonfiction text to prepare for note taking when researching their topic.

We also created a cloud in a jar!! This experiment gave us insight into how a cloud is formed and what extra components assist in cloud formation.

I hope you have a restful week!

Thursday, November 20th

We had a productive day.  Students continued their work with the book, Hurricane.  Today we looked at the different story components (character, setting, plot, problem, solution).  Students worked not just to identify these components, but explain them using details from the story.

We completed our water cycle projects and had a wonderful gallery walk.  Students were able to visit each group's work and discuss the things that they enjoyed. They were also able to leave compliments on a couple of pieces.

We continued our work with lines today.  Students explored parallel lines and were able to describe what it means to be parallel.

The Book Fair will be open until around noon tomorrow.  If you wish to make a purchase, tomorrow is your last day.

Thanks for a wonderful day!

Wednesday, November 19th

It was a busy Wednesday!  Students selected their topics for their first informational writing piece this term.  We organized our notebooks into chapters to prepare for our note taking and research.

We continued our work with angles and lines today.  Students explored perpendicular lines and worked together to complete an activity.  We found them in our classroom and explored the characteristics that make them special.

Yesterday, we had an important discussion as a class about secrets.  Students were made to understand that secrets are only secret if they are never told, and secrets can hurt others.  We also discussed appropriate topics for school and 4th graders.  Students were made aware that topics such as boyfriends and girlfriends are not appropriate topics for kids their age.  We discussed working to invite new people into their circle of friends and be open to meeting new people.  Please continue to discuss these important issues at home.  We want to maintain a safe, comfortable, and welcoming classroom where all students come to learn and grow.
Have a great night!

I hope you enjoyed a restful weekend!

We waisted no time starting our day by responded to a new book.  We read the book Hurricanes, and worked to stop and ask questions about what we read and make inferences after reading.  Students enjoyed the story and are looking forward to working with this book for the remainder of the week.

We continued our look at the Revolutionary War.  Students were introduce the the 1st Continental Congress today and the demands requested by the colonist.

We began looking at points, line segments, lines, rays, and angles in math.  Students worked to create these geometric figures on graph paper and discussed with a partner.

We are looking forward to Literary Cafe' tomorrow.  We hope you can join us at 6:00pm in the multi-purpose room, followed by performances in the classroom.  Our class has been practicing and are looking forward to seeing you.

Have a great day!

Friday, November 14th

We had a good end to our week.  Students were able to practice presenting their poems for the class.  They did a wonderful job and will be given another opportunity on Monday.

Students were given roles to play today and were provided pennies.  They were then taxed on different items, as deemed by the King.  If they were unable to pay their taxes, they were sent to debtors prison.  Ask your child to tell you more about their experience as a colonist!!!

I hope you have a wonderful weekend!

Thursday, November 14th

Happy Thursday!
Students completed an inferencing activity this morning.  This was a great summarizer to our work with our book, Basket Moon.

We took a look temperature today and added thermometers to our Science journals.  We labeled and colored them to show the boiling and freezing points of water in celcius and fahrenheit.  Ask your child to tell you the degrees at which water will freeze or boil!

After discussing a mystery picture by making observations, inferences, explaining knowledge, and developing questions, students took a gallery walk.  They were looking at pictures from the revolutionary time period.  Some were pictures, and some were documents.  Students worked to make observations, inferences, explain their knowledge, and ask questions about each picture that they visited.  This illicited some great conversations!

We reviewed our math assessment from term 2 and completed two more math stations.  We will complete math stations tomorrow, and work to solve word problems.

We will be preview (not purchasing from) the Book Fair at 10:20 tomorrow.  Please do not send money with your child tomorrow.  The Book Fair officially opens next week.  Our class purchasing day is on Tuesday.
I hope to see you all on Tuesday for Literary Cafe'!!  Have a great evening!!

Wednesday, November 12th

What a wonderful Wednesday it was!

We thoroughly enjoyed our visit from our Literary Cafe' Coach, Mrs. Purcell.  She did a wonderful job talking to the students about public speaking and preparing them to present their pieces.  A yellow paper came home with information from Mrs. Purcell about how to practice and coach your child at home.  Students were each given the opportunity to stand in front of the class, say their title and their name.  They did a great job!

We worked in math stations today.  Students worked to maintain and practice their application of area and perimeter independently.  They are working with me in small groups to continue our practice of metric conversions.  Students will work in their stations tomorrow, and finish by Friday.  We will likely have a math assessment on Monday over metric conversions.

The Book Fair is coming to FAVE next week!!!  This is a great fundraising opportunity and encourages your child's love of reading.  I hope that you will join us for Literary Cafe' and stop by the Book Fair before you leave.  Our class will be previewing (not purchasing from) the Book Fair this Friday during the school day.  We will have a class purchase time on Tuesday of next week.  If you'd like to make a purchase on a different day, students can be sent in small groups to the Book Fair.

Have a great evening!!

Tuesday, November 11th

Good afternoon!

It was another great day on the AVE!  We are diving into our book, Basket Moon.  Students worked to make inferences about the questions that they wrote yesterday.  They then worked with a partner to analyze a character change.  The discussions were great!  Several of our book clubs have met already this week.  The rest will be meeting tomorrow.

We did a great experiment in science today.  Students were looking at our line of inquiry about the process of change.  We used water, ice, and a hot plate to create change in the phases of matter.  We then added elements to the water to represent the natural world (salt, and food coloring).  We added heat to the water wish created a change in the water.  Ask your child to tell you more about the changed created from adding heat and ice to the water, and what happened to the salt and food coloring!!  Does this happen in our natural world?  Do our liquids such a sweat, or juice enter into the water cycle like water?

We are looking forward to having our Literary Cafe' Coach join us tomorrow morning!  I can't wait to watch as the students bring their poetry to life in their presentation.  Some tips that you can use at home with your child were sent some on a yellow paper.  We will be using them tomorrow with our coach and they will greatly enhance your child's presentation experience for Literary Cafe'.  We hope to see you all here on November 18th!

See you tomorrow!!

Monday, November 10th

Welcome back from a beautiful weekend!

Students had a great day!  We explored the different phases of matter today.  Students did some acting by becoming molecules.  They modeled different phases of matter and were able to use the clues from each groups performance to determine the phase of matter that the group represented.  We completed a sort of pictures and determined the different characteristics the molecules in each phase of matter.

We then looked at conflict scenarios that led to the French and Indian War.  Students worked with their group to complete read their scenario and answer questions.  We then analyzed each scenario to determine the affect that it had, which inevitably led to war.  Ask your child to tell you more!!

We continued working with metric conversions today.  Students analyzed word problems and worked to use tape models to model their thinking.  They will be using them tonight for homework.  Students will be assessed in math at the end of this week.

We are looking forward to having Literary Cafe' on November, 18th at 6:00.  We hope you can join us!!  Our coach will be coming this week to work with students on their public speaking skills.

Have a great evening!

A huge congratulations to our first class elected Superstar of the Month...Ave Rose!!!

We began an new book for our reading time today.  Students worked to stop and ask questions during our reading of Basket Moon.  We will continue our work with this book next week.

We had a guest teacher, Mrs. Holden, during Science today.  She led the class through an inquiry cycle involving knowledge of the past, and how it helps us plan for the present and future.  We also had visiting teachers from another IB school observe our class today.

Students were given a scenario to kick off our term 3 Social Studies unit.  They were making decisions about what would happen if they were sent, with three of their friends from class, to be in another class, but they still had to follow my rules.  Ask your child to tell you more!

We continued our work with metric conversions when solving word problems today.  We were fortunate to have some 5th graders (and former Sanders' Superstars) join us and assist students with their class work.  These boys are math whizzes and did a great job today!

I hope you have a wonderful weekend!
