We are off to a great start on The Ave!
We have spent our time in math thinking about how we think about math. Students have worked on some challenge problems, and have worked to picture and describe the ways that they see numbers. They were challenged to write equations using only four 4s for the numbers 1-20. While we were not always successful, they worked diligently and persevered, even when they wanted to stop. They talked about numbers and looked for patterns. We will be developing common understandings for math workshop as the week progresses.
Students examined different objects and wrote questions about them. They could write anything that they wondered. Next, they used the IB key concepts (form, function, change, causation, responsibility, connection, and perspective) to sort their questions. The key concepts are the different lenses that we can view learning or understanding through. Students were able to make connections
We set up our reading and writing journals today, and used strategies to search for and choose books that are just right for us. This will help us greatly when we go to the media center on Friday.
Students completed the paper chain challenge on Monday. They were given 12 inches of tape, two pieces of construction paper, and scissors. They had 25 minutes to create the longest paper chain that they could. The communicated their ideas, and strategies with group members and worked so hard to complete the task. Ou longest paper chains stretched across 2/3 of the classroom!
We were not able to complete our team building task this afternoon because students have had difficulty turning their voices off when teachers need their attention. Because it took so long to get the attention of all students, we did not have enough time to complete our team activity. We did read a book and respond to a reflection prompt on the importance of controlling our voices when it is needed. As we continue to build our classroom community and create common understandings and practices, repetition and practice of expectations is important. I know that tomorrow we will be able to complete this fun activity!
Have a wonderful evening!
