Friday, February 28th

Happy last day of February!  We had another busy day as we completed assignments for term 4 and are heading into term 5.  Students presented their reader's theater on the war of 1812 today.  They did a great job demonstrating their creativity.

We are ready for a big and BUSY day Monday as we start a new month, a new term, get new seats and new jobs, and start our new UOI.  There are many great things in store and I hope that everyone is as excited as I am.

We have had many, many students forgetting to bring their agendas and homework to school.  Responsibility is an enormous skill that we have focused on this year and should continue throughout their education.  Please talk to your child about being responsible for completing and returning their homework daily, as well as returning materials to school.  Thank you for you assistance.

Have a great weekend!

Thursday, February 27th

What a great day!  Students were excited to head back to the media center today!  After missing many library checkouts, they enjoyed their cyberbullying lesson and an opportunity to browse the books.

Students worked on a reader's theater today.  It is about the War of 1812 and has several characters.  They will be presenting their drama tomorrow.  We also used this as a time review the characteristics of a drama and compare those to prose, and poetry.

My blue shirt was a big hit today!  Ask your child to tell you why.... :)

Homework:  Read for 30 minutes, write a summary of what you read.

Wednesday, February 26th

We had a great day!  I was so happy to receive a wonderful report from my sub yesterday.  Great work having super behavior Superstars!!!!

We began presenting our summatives today.  Students have done an amazing job of defending their assignments and supporting them with the central idea and lines of inquiry.  I am looking forward to hearing more presentations tomorrow.

We took a short quiz and had a discussion about using context clues to determine the meaning of words in a text.  Students realized that even though they may know what a word means already, they should still read the text.  Words can mean different things depending on the context in which they are presented.

Homework: Read for 30 minutes, Math wk bk pages 12, and 62.
See you tomorrow!

Thank you so much for all of the sweet Valentine's Day cards and treats.  I really appreciate that you thought of me.

Students expressed to me how impressed they were with the amount that we accomplished today.  They worked very hard to complete our assigned tasks on this short day.

Some students have brought home writing to complete over the break.  This is due on Monday morning after the break....no exceptions.  The only other homework is to read and relax.

Have a wonderful week off!  Travel safely and I will see you on February 24th!

Homework:  Students were given several homework assignments today.  These assignments are not intended to be completed tonight.  They were given in advance in case of school cancellations this upcoming week.  No cancellations have been announced at this time.  Please check e-mail, Facebook, and news alerts for updates regarding the developing weather situation and school closures.  Students should keep all of the assigned work in their agendas and bring it to school each day.

I am hoping to see everyone here tomorrow!

Students received a class list in the red folders today.  This is for use if you wish to send Valentines in for the class.  This is completely optional.  If you choose to participate, please send in enough for each student in our class.  We have 27 total students.

Another great day hear at FAVE!  Students enjoyed monitoring and discussing some data from our weather instruments.  We collected them today, and some students will be bringing them home.  Thank you for your assistance with this project.

Students worked to sort characteristics, people, and responsibilities of the branches of government.  We will be looking deeper into checks and balances and how a bill becomes a law.

Students were given response questions to compare two poems today.  They dissected figurative language and utilized schema to answer questions.  Ask your child to tell you more.

Tomorrow we will be taking a quiz over the Articles of Confederation.  Students should utilize the reading activity that was sent home yesterday to study.  Students will also go to their explorations at the end of the day tomorrow.  I know that they are very excited about going!

As we continue looking at the Constitution, students have been reading and studying the preamble and Bill of Rights.  Students looked at important amendments today and worked to describe how those amendments describe the rights and responsibilities of United States Citizens.

We continued looking at poetry today.  Students looked at elements of poetry and worked to create a book with examples of simile, hyperbole, alliteration, metaphor, onomatopoeia, and personification.  Ask your child to give you an example!

Monday, February 3rd

How nice it is to be back today!  After some unexpected time off, it felt great to be back with the class.  We started our day working on ordering decimals.  Students are encouraged to utilize what they know about place value and our base ten number system to order decimals from least to greatest.  Ask your child to tell you about their sorting activity.

We enjoyed our second cultural arts performance today.  We had a wonderful story teller who exposed us to several fables and myths.  He did a great job of including the audience and embarrassing a few of our teachers.  Ask your child to tell you more!

We dove deeper into poetry today, examining figurative language, meter, rhythm, rhyme, and over all theme.  Students discovered that poetry can vary greatly and is left to interpretation.

Thank you to those who brought their science projects in today.  Please bring them tomorrow.

We have rescheduled our explorations from last week to this coming Friday.  Students will be going to the exploration that they signed up for on Tuesday of last week.

Looking ahead:  We have a busy couple of weeks ahead of us as we work to complete our standards for term 4 in a shortened amount of time.  It is important that students are at school on time every day.  Thank you so much for your assistance!

Stay tuned for more information regarding a Wax History Museum for Black History month.  Information will be coming home very soon.
