We had a great morning! Students expanded their division models today. They were able to model the distribution of number discs from the 10s to the 1s place in order to find their quotient and determine their remainder. We are beginning partial quotients tomorrow.
We also began looking at and discussing the phases of the moon. We discussed whether or not we always see the same side of the moon. Ask your child to tell you more!
I had a sub after lunch and received a great report! Great work Superstars!!!
We are looking forward to our walking field trip to Adair Park tomorrow. We are leaving the school around 8:15/8:30 and will return between 11:30 and 12:00. Don't forget to bring your lunch if you did not pre-order a lunch with me last week. Don't forget to wear comfortable clothes, and bring money for the store if you wish to purchase anything.
I will be sending home a study guide for the 13 colonies and for our moon phases. Students can look over them as many times as they need to between now and then end of next week when we will take our assessments. Remember that there may be material on the study guides that we have not yet covered because we still have time left in the term.
Have a great night!

Happy Tuesday!
We had a great morning with division! Students worked to solve division equations using number discs as a model. They were able to break apart their number discs into groups and determine a remainder. Our class is enjoying working in small groups for station activities.
We explored the terms rotate and revolve today. Ask your child to tell you about our movement activity (hint: I was the sun).
Students worked to revise/edit their drafts about their country. We talked about run-on sentences and explored different punctuation that may be added to sentences to make them complete. Some students are almost ready to publish their books!
Our field trip to Agnes Scott is this Thursday. Students will rotate through different stations to experience different points in history. There is a shop, and students will have the opportunity to purchase items from the shop. This is not mandatory. I have sent home the list with pricing information. It is also posted below. I have spoken to the class about bringing correct change with them if they wish to make a purchase.
Next Monday and Wednesday, we will have our bike safety training. If students have a bike that they wish to use/ride during that time, they can have it at school. Otherwise bikes and helmets will be provided.
Have a great evening!

What a great start to our week!
Students worked hard to use area models to model their division equations with remainder. We worked in small groups on our division with remainders using area models, and students worked with cards to create and model division equations. They also completed activities in compass learning.

Students began reading about and creating a hypothesis about the mystery of Jamestown. We will continue to work to solve this mystery on Wednesday. Ask your child to tell you more!
We have a busy two weeks ahead of us. With two field trips, bike safety training, counselor lessons, and all of our end of the term activities and assessments, it is important that everyone is resting well at home, eating a good breakfast, and arriving to school on time.
I hope you had a great weekend!!

Friday, October 16th
Happy Friday! We've had such a great week and today was no exception!
After working yesterday to find remainders when dividing, students created a flip book in their math journals of the divisibility rules. These are rules that allow us to determine if a divisor will divide evenly into a dividend BEFORE we even attempt to solve the equation.
We completed our constellations exploration today, and our note taking on our 13 colonies. Student will dive deeper into the colonies next week and cycles in nature.
Students did a wonderful job working on their writing pieces today. Most students have completed their research and are drafting their note cards/chapters for their books.
I hope you can go and enjoy the homecoming parade today. Thanks for showing your FAVE/DHS spirit today!!

Thursday, October 15th
Another busy day on the AVE.
We began working with division today. Students worked to utilize arrays to solve division word problems involving remainders. They did a great job and have three homework problems tonight to complete.

We took a closer look at constellations. Students worked with an exploration on their Discovery Education app to look at differences in the night sky during different times of the year.
Students enjoyed Spanish with Senora Souki today. They are working to create illustrations and recordings of a story in Spanish. Ask your child to tell you more!

Wednesday, October 14th
What an "out of this world" Wednesday! Students looked great today as they dressed as robots, space, and more.
We worked in math small groups today. Students had small group lessons with me, examining prime number patterns to 100 using multiples. They have some response questions to work on tonight that are related to an activity that we began in class today.
Ms. Theisen joined us again today for a lesson about the life cycle of stars. Students worked to match the meaning of each cycle phase and then created an interpretation of each phase.
We continued working with our text about Columbus day. Students worked to use specific evidence from the text to answer or respond to each question. This proved to be challenging, but we will continue to work on this skill.
Tomorrow is Glamour Dress Up Day!
Don't forget to send in your field trip forms and money. They were due today.

Tuesday, October 13th
We had a very busy and productive Tuesday!
Students worked to determine if a whole number is a multiple of another number. You can see the sample below to get a picture of what we worked on during class today. We are using the equation:
Factor x Factor = multiple to assist us when working through our questions.
Students did a wonderful job on their explorers assessment today. We are looking forward to moving along in our story of America tomorrow.
Students practiced paraphrasing when researching today. They were able to revisit our text about Columbus Day and locate facts. Using paraphrasing, students recorded their facts on their recording sheet.
DON'T FORGET:
Field trip forms and money are due tomorrow.
Tomorrow is space/marian/robot day for FAVE spirit week.
Students received information verification sheets today. Please check that all of the information is correct. If not, make changes on the paper and return it to school. Thank you!
See you tomorrow!
