What a happy day! I hope you all have a very restful break! Students have no required homework. I recommend that they read every day. If you wish for them to complete anything additional they can log in to Odyssey and complete assignments in their backpack. The login is their lunch number and the password is go. Students can also work on xtramath.org. These are not a requirement.
Enjoy your break! See you in December!

Only one more day before our break and we are very busy. Students worked to compare fractions with unlike denominators by finding a common denominator today. Enter learnzillion quick code LZ1433, or LZ1431 to review with your child.
We took a closer look at the writing of the Declaration of Independence today. Students explored the reasons behind the declaration, the writers, and what it presented.
We also began adding personal experience to support our evidence in our opinion essay. Students are working hard and will soon be ready to draft.
Thank you to everyone who was able to join us for our delicious Thanksgiving lunch!

What a fantastic and busy day!
I want to start by thanking everyone who was able to come for Literary Cafe' last night. The turn out was wonderful and all of the students did an amazing job sharing their work.
We continued working to compare fractions. We utilized color tiles and pattern blocks to build objects. Students worked to use different shapes to create their whole object. They then determined what fraction was represented by each shape in their whole. After deciding how many fractional parts each shape represented, they were able to create fractions and compare the sizes of each fractional piece. Students will be comparing fractions for homework this evening.
We had a lesson on close reading using and exert from Stray by Cythia Rylant. Ask your child to tell you more about what they noticed about the characters in the story and how they changed. You also ask why the setting is important, and what some of the important words or phrases from the story are.
Reminder: Tomorrow is our Thanksgiving Lunch. We will be in the cafeteria from 11:00-11:30. We hope you can join us for this wonderful lunch.

We're off to a great start! We spent the morning using our fraction kits to compare fractions with unlike denominators. Students manipulated the fraction pieces and wrote equations to match their findings.
We will be working to find common denominators in the coming days, so practice multiplication facts at home.
We did a brief introduction to sound today and students were challenged to create their thesis for their persuasive writing piece. It was a challenging task, but most completed it today.
Tomorrow is our Literary Cafe' from 6:00-7:30. Please join us in the mulipurpose room, followed by our classroom. Students will present their writing pieces and model all they have learned from coaching.
Thursday is our Thanksgiving Lunch. Our class will be eating from 11:00-11:30. Please join us to celebrate.

Students worked hard to complete math stations today. Our small group focus has been on finding equivalent fractions using multiplication or division of the numerator and denominator.
We also worked to push our thinking further during our essay writing. Students utilized these elaboration prompts to expand their evidence in their drafted essays.
We are looking forward to our second coaching session with our Literary Cafe' coach tomorrow. I hope to see you all on Tuesday from 6:00-7:30. We will begin in the multi-purpose room and then move to the classroom.
Homework: Read for 30 minutes, Study for Spelling test (return spelling homework tomorrow), Math practice

Lots of learning taking place today! We continued our study of fractions. Students were challenged to order fractions on a number line. They worked in groups and rotated around the room.
We discussed convex and concave lenses today and explored their properties. We also discovered how each lens changes light and and reflection. Students were given the light portion of their summative.
We created a taxation without representation situation where students were taxed in the classroom. They gained more understanding about how the colonists felt. Ask your child to tell you more!
Tomorrow: We will have our walking field trip to the Agnes Scott Planetarium tomorrow. It is supposed to be very cold tomorrow, with highs in the 40s. Please be sure you are dressed appropriately for the chilly weather.
Homework: Read for 30 minutes, Math practice.

Happy Monday!
We have a super busy week ahead. We started by utilizing snap cubes to model equivalent fractions today. Students were able to create shapes using different quantities of cubes. They then represented simple fractions by dividing their shape equally. They found equivalence in their modeling. Ask your child to tell you more.
As we continue exploring the causes of the American Revolution, I can tell that students feel passionate about the colonists and are truly understanding how the challenges that they faced created conflict. Ask your child to tell you more about The Proclamation of 1763, Stamp Act, Sugar Act, Tea Act, and Townshend Act.
We continued to explore essay writing today. Students discovered what great free writing for essays looks like. They utilized their strategies for choosing a topic and were able to free write for an extended period of time about their topic.
Please check your child's communication folder for their report card and Nagliere report. If you have any questions please e-mail me.

Happy weekend! We were very lucky to have our coach for the Literary Cafe' come this morning. Ms. Jones did a great job of explaining and demonstrating speaking behaviors. Every student was able to get up in front of the class two different times to practice great speaking skills. Ms. Jones will be coming again next week, and students will be practicing with their own writing piece.
We used links from Edmodo to further explore the taxes that angered the colonists. We continued our work with finding equivalent fractions. I expect to quiz students next week.

We had a very productive day! Students worked to complete their math stations for the week. We continued learning how to play with fraction dominoes. This works to compare equivalent fractions.
After a trip to the library, students continued their study for The French and Indian War. We reviewed our information about the causes of the war. Students then utilized their close reading techniques to take notes on and analyze a passage about the war and it's outcome. Students were able to better understand why colonists were angry, and how their challenges led to conflicts.
This afternoon, we learned a strategy to help us gather ideas for opinion writing. Students were able to take something important to them and write about it. Ask your child to tell you more!
Homework: Read for 30 minutes, Spelling, Math
Upcoming Dates: We have several important events coming up in the next two weeks.
Tomorrow and next Friday our coaches will be coming to prepare us for Literary Cafe'. Literary Cafe' will be on Tuesday the 19th and it will start in the Multi-purpose room.
Next Wednesday is our walking field trip to the Agnes Scott Planetarium. I already have the chaperones needed. Thank you so much for volunteering!

I am so happy to be back at school! Students worked in Math stations today. They were using a variety of activities and games to support previously learned standards and equivalent fractions. When students come to my group we are learning how to play fraction dominoes. I met with a couple of groups today and we will continue tomorrow.
We also began some exploration of the properties of light. We used a light bulb to explore different objects and determine if they were opaque, transparent, or translucent. Students used their findings to create definitions for these words. We also explored mirrors and prisms. Students were able to create a definition of refraction and reflection after using these tools.
We continued working on our opinion writing today. Students explored goals and expectations for their pieces. They found what they did well and set some goals to work on. They brought home a piece to work on and review for homework tonight. Ask them to share some of their goals with you.
Chaperones needed: Next Wednesday, November 13th we will be going on a walking field trip to the Agnes Scott Planetarium. I am looking for one or two chaperones. Please e-mail me if you are interested. csanders@csdecatur.net
Homework: Read for 30 minutes, Math problem, Finish I love ice cream draft. Reread it. Use stars to identify places where you tried to meet your goals. Use fireworks in places that were tough. Be prepared to share with your partner tomorrow.
