Thursday, March 26th

We had a busy day.

Students continued working on their writing pieces.  Most began publishing today.  Students are working hard to complete all of their revisions and edits prior to publishing.  They are reminded that the published piece is their best and final work, so they should take their time when completing their piece.

Small groups presented their information about their simple machine today.  Students were able to take notes during the presentations.  This information should have come up for them to study.

We enjoyed our lunch with the 3rd graders from Glennwood.  Ask your child to tell you about their visit!

After working on word problems, students completed a math station.  They will continue working with Compass Learning, Whittzle, Fraction Dominoes, Comparing Decimals, and Solving word problems tomorrow and possibly into next week.

Tomorrow is the last day to send in order forms for Chris Grabenstein books and variety show participation forms.

Friday, March 20th

It's Friday and the first day of Spring!!!

We worked to finish our research for our writing pieces today.  If students do not feel as though they have finished their research, they should work this weekend to finish.  Resources can be accessed through the blog.

We explored levers today.  Students utilized spring scales and weights to verify and collect data about the effect of moving the load closer or further from the fulcrum.  Ask your child to tell you more!

Students worked to create advertisements for and against the annexation of Texas.  Ask your child to share both sides of the argument for annexation!

REMINDER:  MONDAY IS PICTURE DAY

We are also looking forward to hosting the 3rd graders from Glenwood on Thursday.  We had a great discussion about how students in our class felt last year when they arrived for their tour of F.AVE.  They are excited to meet with these rising 3rd graders and put their minds at ease.

Have a wonderful and restful weekend!

Thursday, March 19th

Good afternoon, everyone!

Students explored functional writing as an expository text and even completed a math assignment during our reading time.  They also completed a reading station.  We will finish our stations for the week tomorrow.

We explored levers today and the effects of moving the fulcrum closer or further from the load.  We will continue with further lever experimentation tomorrow.

Students also completed a math assessment.

During this time of the year, when the weather is warmer and spring is upon us, students tend to get antsy.  We had a brief discussion about the importance of maintaining our focus and doing our best in the classroom.  Please, help support this discussion by reminding your child of these important responsibilities.

Have a great day!

Let me first apologize for the lack of posts this week.  I have had sick children and have been out of the building.

We had a great day!  Students worked to determine the supporting evidence of an expository text about School Uniforms.  They did a wonderful job with this and have had some great exposure to news articles.

Students continued research for their writing pieces.  They are working to find support for their researchable questions.  Most students are almost finished.  We will be done with research by the end of the week.

We are working to write equations and expanded form for our decimal fractions.  Students have performed well with the decimal tasks.  We will have a quiz tomorrow.

Reminders:
Picture day is Monday, March 23rd.
We are hosting 3rd graders from Glenwood on March 26th.
Forms for the FAVE Variety Show are due by March 28th.

Have a great evening!

Friday, March 13th

Whew!  We had a lot of exciting things going on today.

We were fortunate to start our morning with a visit from the Wylde Center.  They led a great presentation and activity about observing from a scientific perspective.  Students examined seeds and made comparisons.

I then played a little trick on the class.  As an introduction to the Texas Revolution, I read an e-mail from Mr. Roaden (it was fake).  Ask your child to tell you more!!

Students then participated in College and Career Explorations.  Ask your child to tell you about what they experienced today.

I hope you all have a restful weekend!!  See you on Monday!

Thursday, March 13th

I am so happy to be back today.  I missed everyone yesterday!

We had a great day!  Students signed up for explorations this morning.  Explorations will happen tomorrow, so I know the class is looking forward to them.

Students worked to complete a virtual science lab in Discovery Education.  They were changing variables (floor type, mass, type of force) to move an object across the floor.  Their task was to determine the combination of variables that would make it the most difficult to move the object.

We finished our trip through the Oregon Trail.  Students were able to discuss if, based on their knowledge of the terrain and mode of transportation, they would have chosen to go west.  Ask your child to tell you more!!

We had a wonderful Spring Luncheon today!  The cafeteria staff always does a great job and today was no exception.  I hope you enjoyed your visit!!

If your child is interested in participating in the FAVE Variety Show, registration forms are due by March 28th (no exceptions).

Have a wonderful evening!!

Tuesday, March 10th

We had a wonderful day!

Students began working in reading stations and math stations today.  I love watching them work in small groups.  It is fun to see them collaborate on assignments and play learning games.

We continued our work with decimals today as we branched into hundredths.  Students were able to use a meter stick as a reference for hundredths.  The compared 1 centimeter to 1/10 meter.  During math stations, they played fractions dominoes, worked to solve word problems, practice multiplication facts, worked on compass learning, and practiced with decimals.

We prepared for a science activity that we will begin on Thursday.

We are looking forward to our 4th grade luncheon on Thursday.  Our time is 11:40 -12:10.

On Friday, we are excited to have visitors from the Wylde Center joining our class in our school garden.  We are also really looking forward to explorations on Friday.

Be sure to check the upcoming events for this month.  See you tomorrow!

Friday, March 6th

Happy Friday!

We had a wonderful day!  Students took their knowledge of text structure and applied it.  They worked together to analyze a variety of nonfiction texts with a partner or small group.

We were lucky to go to the championship round of the Black History Bowl.  Students were excited to watch and had great questions to ask.  I know they will be geared up for next year.

We worked to create tape diagram and area models for our decimal fractions.  Students were able to create an equivalent mixed number.

Thank you to all who were able to join us for Student-Led Conferences/Portfolio Night.  I know the students were very excited to share their learning with you.  We hope you enjoyed it!

Have a wonderful weekend!

Pencils and Tissues Needed

Our class is in need of pencils and tissues.  Any donations would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you!

Thursday, March 5th

It was another great day!

We completed our text structures lesson this morning, and we completed a reading station.

We continued analyzing our painting of manifest destiny.  Students were able to come up with a definition for manifest destiny.  We also looked at the growth of America so far and how it will continue to grow.

Ask your child to tell you about our fun experiment today that helped explain Newton's 3rd Law of motion - for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.  It involved hot wheels tracks, two canisters, a penny, water, and alka seltzer.

Students were introduced to decimal fractions and decimals today.  They used a ruler to analyze centimeters and create equations that equal one whole centimeter.

We are looking forward to Portfolio Night/Student-Led Conferences this evening.

Don't forget that our luncheon is next Thursday.  Please send in your RSVPs.

See you in the morning!

Information about Student-Led Conferences

  • Portfolio Night Thursday, March 5th

  • This night is designed for students to have an opportunity to inform parents about what they have learned, demonstrate new understandings and articulate personal goals for the remainder of the school year. Please make sure that you have signed up with your homeroom teacher to attend with your child(ren).  Our goal is to have students independently lead parents through their portfolio of learning for the IB unit of inquiry, How We Express Ourselves.  However, if you need additional information or clarification there will be an opportunity to indicate that.  Teachers will respond to all inquiries via email soon after this event.

  • This sharing of work also includes Spanish, the Arts and Physical Education.  Additional areas of the building will be open so that students can share how their learning in these areas also connected to the unit of study, How We Express Ourselves.  Feel free to visit these areas before or after your scheduled conference time in the classroom.

  • Music:  Room 227
  • Art:  Cafeteria & Falcon's Nest
  • Spanish:  Media Center
  • Physical Education:  Multi-Purpose room

Also, feel free to stop by room 135 if you need to briefly speak with LINKS or EIP teachers.
