What a great day!
We examined and article from Our Little Earth. We utilized strategies for paragraph shrinking to develop and write the main idea for each paragraph in the article.
Students began inquiring into the characteristics of stars. We will continue this inquiry through the remainder of the week.
We excitedly began our exploration into Christopher Columbus. Students are inquiring into his reasons for exploring, outcomes of his explorations, and new perspectives gained. It will be interesting to find out what new perspectives our students have gained after we finish.
Tomorrow will be the last morning of CogAT testing.
Have a great night!

We had a great day of learning!
Students took their first day of CogAT Testing. We will continue at 8:00 tomorrow and 9:00 on Thursday.
We rotated through math stations. Students utilized area models as a warm up for multi-digit multiplication. We then took the area model strategy and used it to apply the partial products strategy. These strategies directly connect to the standard algorithm For examples of each method, check out the picture below.
Students used their comparing and contrasting skills to explore their drawings of our space pictures. They were able to determine the different outcomes and perspectives from each exploration, either zoomed in or not.
It was an exciting day in music with Mr. Brooks as the class had their first guitar lesson!!
Students received a field trip permission form for our walking field trip to Adair Park, where we will take a walk through history. I will need only two chaperones for this trip, and chaperones will also need to pay the cost of the field trip. Please contact me at csanders@csdecatur.net if you are available. Thanks!
We are looking forward to the 5th Avenue 5k next Saturday! I would love to meet as a group before the 5k race that morning, to support each other and have a great time! I will be on the lower field at F.AVE at 8:15 that morning. We will walk around to start the race together at 9:00. The Mayor's Mile begins after the 5k. See you Saturday!

Happy Monday!
We're off to a great start!
Genius Hour groups met this morning. The group that works with me for Genius Hour has been attempting to spend $1,000,000! They have specific criteria that is required for their spending, and are keeping record of their purchases on a "check book." This great, real world application of addition and subtraction strategies, as well as budgeting, and planning for spending has the kids super excited!
We expanded our understanding of place value strategies to multiply two digit numbers by two digit numbers. Students are able to draw area models for representation of their equation and utilize them to solve.
Students acted as explorers when inquiring into the characteristics of space objects seen in pictures on their iPads. They were working to collect information and sketch their image. Only some of the students were allowed to use the zoom feature to see their pictures up close. Tomorrow will will compare our outcomes and discuss new perspectives about exploration.
Tomorrow, we will begin our CogAT testing. On Tuesday and Wednesday, we will begin at 8:00, and on Thursday, we will begin at 9:00. It is a short assessment and will give us information about how each child learns.
Have a great night!

Friday, September 23rd - Weekly Recap
We had a wonderfully busy week on the Ave. after a restful Fall Break!
Students began inquiry into our Central Idea for Term 2:
Exploration leads to discovery and develops new understandings.
During Term 2, we will be inquiring into:
Reasons for exploration
Outcomes of exploration
Perspectives associated with discoveries.
Students utilized their exploration skills to attempt to determine what item was inside a sealed envelope. They utilized the IB Attitude of curiosity and the Learner Profile Trait of open-minded to work as a team and make educated predictions before the big reveal of what was inside. We then worked to finish the sentence, "Exploration is _____________." Ask your child to tell you more!
We have been diving into our inquiry of European Explorers. We've inquired into their reasons for exploration. Are all reason good reasons? We also discussed the outcomes and new perspectives from their discoveries. Are new perspectives only developed in the explorers, or are their other new perspectives to think about?
We began applying our place value strategies from Term 1 to solve multi-digit multiplication equations. Students have worked to create area models to represent multiplication equations, decomposing the numbers into their expanded form before multiplying. This will lead to a greater connection when they learn to use the standard algorithm, a standard for 5th grade.
We also enjoyed our first Village Gathering of the year. This is a time to celebrate our inquiry from each term, and all of the hard work from our students. I hope that you are able to join us for our next one!
Thank you for a wonderful week!
Looking ahead:
We are continuing with conferences! I have thoroughly enjoyed meeting with you and discussing your child's progress this year. Thank you for your input and open-minded discussion. We are a team, and I appreciate your support!
Don't forget to register for the 5th Avenue 5k and Mayor's Mile. The race is on October 8th at 9:00 and starts at F.AVE. Stay tuned for information about meeting together before the race!
A message from Maestra Wagner about Spanish:
¡Saludos F.AVE familias!
At the end of Term 1, Spanish students were assessed in Writing and Listening. Please be on the lookout for your child’s end of term assessments in the red communication folder. The grade for the Writing assessment is derived from a combination of quantity of target vocabulary employed and comprehensibility. We have reviewed grading expectations extensively in class; ask your child to explain his or her grade!
In the event that your child was absent or received a 1 on an assessment, there will be an opportunity to re-take the assessment during the week of September 26 – 30. Extra, at-home practice of Term 1 vocabulary (via our Quizlet site) is recommended before re-taking the assessment.
Looking ahead, we began Term 2 on September 19. As always, Term 2 vocabulary activities are available on our Quizlet site.
I look forward to another great term,
Maestra Wagner

We had our #bestdayyet!!
We had a great start to our day at our first Village Gathering! I saw several of you there, but was not able to say, "hello." Thank you for joining us!
We split into math stations today. They run a bit differently on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays now, and everyone did a lovely job staying on task and focused. Our focus was to create area models to represent multiplication equations when multiplying by tens.
We examined a Time For Kids today, searching for nonfiction text features and describing ways they helped us understand the text. We also began reading, The One and Only Ivan. This is Decatur's On the Same Page book, so feel free join us in reading.
Tomorrow is the last day to register for the Fifth Avenue 5k and Mayors Mile for the discounted price. I am registered and the class with the most registrations (including parents) will win and ice cream or pizza party. You can sign up using the link below.

We had another busy day on the Ave!
We began are inquiry into expository writing. Students will be working generate research questions, complete research, and write a piece utilizing nonfiction text features. We are excited to get started this week with generating research questions!
We completed an inquiry activity related to exploration. Students were asked to complete the sentence, "Exploration is..." After coming up with several ideas on their own, they compared with their table mates to find commonalities. We used these to generate a class list of what we believe exploration is... Students were then given an item to explore. They utilized many techniques to explore the envelope, hoping to determine what was inside. Ask your child to tell you more!!
Check out this video on exploration that may facilitate some exploration discussion!
The New Age of Exploration
I hope you were able to go to Fresh to Order this evening for F.AVE Spirit night.
Tomorrow is Walk-and-Roll to School! Let's have as many families participate as possible!
See you Thursday for our Village Gathering at 8:00. Have a great night!

We had such a wonderful day at the zoo! Students worked diligently to collect data and information on their research animal. They were working to determine how the animals community/ecosystem is sustained through the relationships between the animal and its habitat. We began our final products when we returned. These will be completed in class by Friday.
Student brought their red communication folders home today (sorry for a Wednesday communication day). Their math assessment is inside. Please look it over, sign it at the top of the front page, and return it to school tomorrow. If you don't find their test, it will come home tomorrow. They are working to complete it.
Don't forget to register for the Fifth Avenue 5k and Mayors Mile! It is a great race in October that benefits F.AVE!
