We had a wonderfully busy week on the Ave. after a restful Fall Break!
Students began inquiry into our Central Idea for Term 2:
Exploration leads to discovery and develops new understandings.
During Term 2, we will be inquiring into:
Reasons for exploration
Outcomes of exploration
Perspectives associated with discoveries.
Students utilized their exploration skills to attempt to determine what item was inside a sealed envelope. They utilized the IB Attitude of curiosity and the Learner Profile Trait of open-minded to work as a team and make educated predictions before the big reveal of what was inside. We then worked to finish the sentence, "Exploration is _____________." Ask your child to tell you more!
We have been diving into our inquiry of European Explorers. We've inquired into their reasons for exploration. Are all reason good reasons? We also discussed the outcomes and new perspectives from their discoveries. Are new perspectives only developed in the explorers, or are their other new perspectives to think about?
We began applying our place value strategies from Term 1 to solve multi-digit multiplication equations. Students have worked to create area models to represent multiplication equations, decomposing the numbers into their expanded form before multiplying. This will lead to a greater connection when they learn to use the standard algorithm, a standard for 5th grade.
We also enjoyed our first Village Gathering of the year. This is a time to celebrate our inquiry from each term, and all of the hard work from our students. I hope that you are able to join us for our next one!
Thank you for a wonderful week!
Looking ahead:
We are continuing with conferences! I have thoroughly enjoyed meeting with you and discussing your child's progress this year. Thank you for your input and open-minded discussion. We are a team, and I appreciate your support!
Don't forget to register for the 5th Avenue 5k and Mayor's Mile. The race is on October 8th at 9:00 and starts at F.AVE. Stay tuned for information about meeting together before the race!
A message from Maestra Wagner about Spanish:
¡Saludos F.AVE familias!
At the end of Term 1, Spanish students were assessed in Writing and Listening. Please be on the lookout for your child’s end of term assessments in the red communication folder. The grade for the Writing assessment is derived from a combination of quantity of target vocabulary employed and comprehensibility. We have reviewed grading expectations extensively in class; ask your child to explain his or her grade!
In the event that your child was absent or received a 1 on an assessment, there will be an opportunity to re-take the assessment during the week of September 26 – 30. Extra, at-home practice of Term 1 vocabulary (via our Quizlet site) is recommended before re-taking the assessment.
Looking ahead, we began Term 2 on September 19. As always, Term 2 vocabulary activities are available on our Quizlet site.
I look forward to another great term,
Maestra Wagner
